Effects of Artemia powder in Rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) broodstock diet on the egg quality

Authors

Abstract:

Rainbow trout is one of the most important cultured species in Iran. Despite the progressively increased production of this species during the last decade, there have been many egg quality problems in the hatcheries yet. Thus, in this research we investigated the effects of adding Artemia powder to broodstock diet on Rainbow trout egg quality. Fishes were fed commercial diet for four months, then experimental diets containing 0% (control), 2.56% (5% replacement), 5.12% (10% replacement), 10.24% (20% replacement), and 15.37% (30% replacement) Artemia powder. Results indicated that the values of absolute and relative fecundity in the treatment 5% were significantly higher than in the rest of treatments and in the control group (p<0.05). There were no significant differences amongst the treatments and control group in terms of egg number per gram, egg diameter, total protein and total lipid values (p>0.05). The parentage of the eyed eggs and hatching rates in the experimental treatments were significantly higher than the control group. The values of HUFA n-3 in the experimental treatments were significantly higher than the control group (p<0.05). in conclusion, based on the results, adding 5% Artemia powder to rainbow trout broodstock diet can improve egg quality of this species.

Rainbow Trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss

Rainbow trout are classified as Oncorhynchus mykiss, and as such belong to the same genus as Pacific salmon, and to the family Salmonidae, which includes Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar), various trout (Salvelinus sp.), Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus), Arctic grayling (Thymallus arcticus) and whitefish (Coregonus sp.). Rainbow trout are native to areas around the North Pacific Ocean, from souther...

Effects of dietary selenomethionine on larval rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss).

Increased selenium (Se) concentrations in water (>10 microg/L) have been measured in the San Diego Creek, which is a tributary of the Upper Newport Bay in Orange County, CA. The objective of this study was to develop tissue- and dietary-based thresholds for Se in resident fish species in San Diego Creek. A 90-day dietary experiment was conducted to determine the effects of seleno-L-methionine (...

The physiological effects of a biologically incorporated silver diet on rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss).

Silver was biologically incorporated into a diet by exposing rainbow trout for 7 days to 100 mg/l of waterborne silver as silver thiosulphate. These fish were processed into a fine powder (trout meal) and pelleted to form a nutritionally balanced feed which was then fed to juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Fish were fed either a diet containing 3.1 microg/g biologically incorporated...

Effects of the Pomegranate powder on the Body composition, hematological and biochemical indices of the rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss ).

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of pomegranate powder on the body composition, hematological, and biochemical indices of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Pomegranate peel powder was added to the experimental diets at 0 (control), 1, 2, 3 and 4 % with 3 replicates. In a completely randomized design, 450 rainbow trout with an average weight of 45±5 g were reared in 15 cem...

Metabolism in Erythrocytes of the Rainbow Trout Oncorhynchus Mykiss

Experiments were carried out to investigate the relationship between ion exchange and energy metabolism in rainbow trout erythrocytes in vitro. Under resting conditions, the sodium/potassium pump accounts for 20 % of the cellular energy budget. In the presence of the /S-adrenergic agonist isoproterenol, however, this increases to 43 %. Inhibition of the sodium/potassium pump with ouabain result...
